چکیده

[1] The structure of the density discontinuity across the plasmapause is often based on electron and H density profiles with the contribution of heavy ions (He, O etc) neglected. Electron and ion density measurements in this region may differ significantly due to the presence of heavy ions and it is important for the intercomparison of different datasets to understand these differences. Dynamics Explorer (DE-1) magnetic field and plasma composition data have been used to compare heavy ion responses across the plasmapause and to calculate the mass loaded ion density (r) profiles. To illustrate this we investigate mass loading through radial profile variations in the Alfven velocity (VA). Results show that the gradient in r and VA across the plasmapause is modified when mass loading due to multiple heavy ion species is included, particularly in the presence of the O torus. Application to ultra-low frequency (ULF) field line resonance is used as an example where the contribution from heavy ions smoothes out the expected ULF wave resonant frequency discontinuity at the plasmapause. Monitoring the plasmapause using geomagnetic field line resonances

[1] This paper discusses the use of ground magnetometer data to derive plasma mass density profiles of the dayside plasmapause region with spatial and temporal resolution in the range 0.15–0.4 RE and 20–60 min. This is achieved using cross-phase techniques to identify field line resonance signatures that are not apparent in power spectra. Under quiet conditions, mass density profiles do not sho...

The dependence of magnetospheric plasmamass loading on geomagnetic activity using Cluster

Understanding changes in the magnetospheric mass density during disturbed geomagnetic conditions provides valuable insight into the dynamics and structure of the environment. The mass density plays a significant role in a variety of magnetospheric processes, such as wave propagation, magnetic reconnection rates, and radiation belt dynamics. In this study, the spatial variations of total plasma ...

A study of magnetic drift motion of particles around the equatorial plasmapause by using the cluster observation

On August 7, 2003 the Cluster spacecraft moved through the dayside magnetosphere. The energetic particle spectrometer on board Cluster provided measurements of an extensive range of energy. Besides, satellite measurements of geomagnetic field showed a gradient magnetic field. It is known that an inhomogeneity of the magnetic field leads to a drift of charged particles. In this paper, the drift ...

Plasmapause Morphology Determined from an Empirical Ionospheric Convection Model

The steady state electric potentials derived from empirical ionospheric onvection models were mapped to the magnetospheric equatorial plane and added to the Earth's rotational field to examine the local time dependence of the plasmapause radius. The last closed equipotential line was assumed to be the plasmapause. The sensitivity of plasmapause shape and size derived in this way was studied by ...

Design Spectrum for Near Fault Ground Motions Considering Frequency-Dependence of CH/SC Material Behavior Regarding Laboratory and Field Shear Wave Velocity (Vs)

Introduction One-dimensional site response analysis is widely performed to account for local site effects during an earthquake. Most of these approaches assume that dynamic soil properties are frequency independent. Laboratory test results as well as in-situ testing show that shear modulus and damping ratio are dependent on the frequency of loading. Although the amplification factor at ground ...
